But what about more sedate holiday gatherings, like Thanksgiving, the office holiday party or a demure gathering of family and friends? There are occasions when we may want to look dressed up, but also grown up.

For a look that is sophisticated, classic and timeless, try Triple Cognac PurePressed Triple Eyeshadow on the eyes, with Black Plus Cream To Powder Eyeliner and Longest Lash Mascara in Dark Auburn.

To finish the look, there is nothing more elegant and refined than red lips. For real staying power, remember to start with Lip Definer. Try Crimson and then top with Nicole PureMoist LipColour, or experiment to find the perfect shade of red for you.

Even if you don't, everyone else seems to, so why not get in on the fun? Here's a way to capture all the drama and excitement of the second installment of the Twilight series in a look that's PG by day, and red-hot by night.

Our own Internet Marketing Assistant, Carleen, came in this morning rocking this amazing vampire eye look, inspired by the Twilight series and the sensational Prada's fall '09 runway look. We all loved this look on the runway, but none of us were quite so sure how to translate it into a wearable version. Our heartfelt thanks to Carleen for figuring it out!

This is how she did it:

- First, line eyes with copper end of Double Dazzle.
- Apply 24 Karat Rose Gold to entire lid by patting it on with the Deluxe Shader Brush.
- Use Oyster PurePressed Eyeshadow to highlight the brow bone.
- Finish with Black Ice Longest Lash Mascara.

One thing to keep in mind: I'm a beauty fanatic, but I'm not a photographer, so my apologies for the sub-par quality of the photos. Also, these pictures were taken at 5pm. It's the end of the day and with no touch ups (we wouldn't let her), Carleen is still looking way, way Bella.

Coming soon: An evening version of this seductive look for a special occasion look that will "Eclipse" everyone else's!

Beauty means so many things to different people, but most of us identify with one (or many) icons of beauty and style. Do you see yourself as the easy-going beauty next door? Are you classically stylish with a quirky twist? Maybe you're a blonde bombshell, a sultry vixen, or a fearless trend-setter. Or maybe it depends on the day!

Whoever you are or would like to be, let your voice be heard! We have a fun poll on Facebook, and would love to know: who is your beauty icon?

One of my favorite makeup looks this fall is the balanced face. Equal definition on lips and eyes looks sophisticated, sexy and polished.

Trend #2: Balanced Definition

Goes well with: Elegant day wear (think Calvin Klein and Hugo Boss); or skinny jeans tucked into knee length boots.

Our take:

Start with a flawless complexion. Apply Dream Tint with the Blending Brush.

Blush the cheeks softly with In Touch Cream Blush.

Next, apply PurePressed Base with the Handi Brush and mist face gently with Hydration Spray.

Now for the eyes. Choose a PurePressed Eye Shadow Triple: apply the lightest shade to the lid, the medium shade to the crease and the darkest shade to the outer corner. Lift the eye a bit by winging up ever so slightly.

Line the eyes with a coordinating shade of Pencil. Since I am horribly eyeliner-challenged, I always use the Detail Brush, picking up color from the Pencil and applying it to the lash line with the brush. I get a smoother application and it gently blends and smudges it all at once.

Finish the eyes with PureLash Extender&Conditioner and several coats of Longest Lash Mascara in Black Ice

To create a softly defined lips: Line and fill in the lips with Lip Definer and top with a coordinating shade of PureGloss.

Here are some shade combinations to try:

Silver Lining PurePressed Eye Shadow Triple with Black/Grey Pencil; In Touch Cream Blush in Connection; Terra Cotta Lip Definer with Iced Mocha PureGloss.

Khaki KrazePurePressed Eye Shadow Triple with Black/Brown Pencil; In Touch Cream Blush in Chemistry; Sienna Lip Definer and Hazelnut PureGloss.

Cloud Nine PurePressed Eye Shadow Triple with Black/Grey Pencil; In Touch Cream Blush in Charisma; Rose Lip Definer and Rasberry PureGloss.

Week 3 Scavenger Hunt Contest Code

The code for the jane iredale mineral makeup scavenger hunt for week 3: October 10th, is Anti-Inflammatory.
Although we support EWG which is responsible for the Skin Deep site, we also have serious issues with it. The methods it has for assessing products is done without any discussion with the manufacturer and, therefore, leads to inaccurate information. For example, it has assumed that we use nano technology in our sunscreens which is not true. We have tried to enter into a discussion with them about this but they are unresponsive and have not replied to phone calls or e-mails. They also pay no attention to quantities used in a product. For example, they rate everything the same whether it's 50% of the formula or .005%. This is hugely important since ingredients are toxic at different levels. Homeopathy, for example, says that there is no such thing as a toxic ingredient, just toxic amounts.

EWG gives us a toxic rating on our 24 karat food-grade gold because they rate it as colloidal gold which it isn't. They rate the lakes we use toxic because commonly lakes and FD&C dyes are made from petroleum - ours aren't. The lakes we use are natural dyes bonded to a calcium substrate. We do everything we can to make our products as clean as possible.

If you have an issue with a particular ingredient, please don't hesitate to ask us about it. We will explain why we use it and how it is derived.
Is it just me or are the fall trends amazing this year? Here is the first post in a series on having fun with them.

Trend #1: Hot Pink Lips!

Goes well with: Neon accents on clothing or accessories.

Our take: Use warm golden/copper shades on the eyes. Try the gold end of Double Dazzle on the lid, and a bit of the copper end in the crease. Simply draw it on and blend with your finger. Keep it simple and soft: skip eye liner, and add just a bit of mascara. I am obsessed with Longest Lash Mascara in Black Ice. it is the perfect inky black, makes full feathery lashes, and I've really noticed that my lashes are longer since I starterd using it.

Add a sheer pop of color to the cheeks with In Touch Cream Blush in Clarity. Just stroke it onto the apples of your cheeks (smile) and blend gently with your fingers.

For really bright lips, start with Renee PureMoist LipColour and top with Pink Candy PureGloss. Or for a more sheer look, just use Pink Candy.

Mineral Makeup Scavenger Hunt Sweepstakes - Week 1 Code

Have you heard about our Makeover Your Makeup Bag Contest? You get to drag and drop your favorite makeup into your own virtual makeup bag, then let us know with words, pictures or video why we should "Makeover Your Makeup Bag." Make up to make your eyes sparkle.

I have been totally inspired by playing with items in the new Silver Lining collection, and have recently discovered a few great tips that really add sparkle to the eyes.

Trick #1 Metallic Liquid Eye Liner: This is my absolute favorite, and it can be used with even the softest daytime makeup. I picked this up during a video shoot with two of our beloved National Makeup Artists/Educators. Add a thin line of metallic Liquid Eye Liner close to the upper lash line once regular eye makeup is done (Shawn). Let the brush do the job: just lay it along the lash line (Kevin). It really works, even in the passenger seat of a moving car! You don't have to have such a steady hand because the shimmery, metallic quality of the liner is so forgiving. Silver looks lovely with cool eye shadow colors like grey and purple; while Gold is gorgeous with warm, rich shades such as brown, bronze and taupe. It adds this incredible, subtle flash of light, and the eyes magically twinkle with each blink or turn of the head.

Trick #2 Midnight Blue and White Pencil: Here at jane iredale, we have been waiting not-so-patiently for the Midnight Blue Pencil (thank you Jane!). Lining the water line/inner rim is an old trick that really makes the eyes look awake and adds beautiful intensity. But for a soft, subtle look, try lining just under the lower lash line with the White Pencil, blending well so it is unnoticeable. It simply makes the eyes bright.

Trick #3 Shadow Placement: Traditionally we are taught to put the medium shade of eye shadow on the lid, the dark shade in the crease and the lightest shade on the brow bone. This looks great, but here's another technique that really makes the eyes shine. Use the Deluxe Shader Brush to press the lightest shade, preferably with a bit of shimmer, onto the eye lid. Use the Crease Brush to apply the medium shade in the crease. Finally, accent just the outer corner of the lid with the darkest shade. Try applying it with the Eye Shader Brush in a small circular motion for control and nice blending in this tiny area. Blend everything with a clean Crease Brush. As a final touch, swipe the edge of the Flocked Sponge from the outer corner of the eye to the outer corner of the brow to be sure everything is neat and lifted.

Try any one of these techniques or all three at once. They are beautiful, delicate and subtle; or dramatic, vampy and intense, depending on how you apply.

Fall Eye Shadow: Quick Smoky Eyes!

Smoky eyes are everywhere for fall, and the look has never been fresher because they are being done in every shade from classic charcoal to soft browns, and even vibrant shades like plum or teal. Smoky eyes is not a color, it is a technique; or rather many techniques. Here is one of my favorites from makeup artist Christian McNally. It looks fierce and only takes about five minutes. Have faith. it may look like a hot mess when you are halfway through, but it comes together magically in the end. Blending is the key!

Start by smoothing a tiny bit of Lemon Lid Primer over the whole lid, lash line to brow. Blend well with your finger tips or the Camouflage Brush.

Next, apply coordinating eye Pencil: For example, Black/Brown works well with brown or plum smoky eyes; Black or Black/Grey works with charcoal or teal. Draw a thick line across the upper lash line, going about half way up the lid towards the crease. Draw another line under the lower lashes, from inner to outer corner. Connect the two lines at the outer corner, and don't worry about being neat.

Blend the Pencil well with the Small Fluff Brush to a soft, edgeless finish. One thing I have learned is to blend with a very light touch. It may take longer, but otherwise I end up blending off the makeup I just applied!

Take your desired shade of PurePressed Eyeshadow Triple. Apply the medium shade to the outer two-thirds of the upper lid with the Crease Brush. The crease can stay clean for this look; concentrate the color on the lid and lash line.

Apply the lightest shade on the inner third on the upper lid with the same brush and blend the two together with your clean Crease Brush (simply wipe it off on a tissue).

With the Mini Dome Brush, use the darkest shade in the trio to intensify everywhere you placed the eye Pencil. Blend well.

Again with the Crease Brush, highlight with a little bit of Oyster (shimmery) or Bone (matte) PurePressed Eye Shadow in the inner corner of the eye at the sides of the nose, and on the brow bone. Blend well.

Line the inner rim (waterline) of the upper and lower lash line with Liner. Use the same liner or try Black for fierce drama, or Midnight Blue to really whiten the whites of your eyes.

Apply PureLash Extender & Conditioner to upper and lower lashes to condition lashes and add volume and length. While it is still damp, follow with several coats of Longest Lash Mascara in Black Ice.

Now with eyes this intense, please keep the cheeks and lips soft and neutral. The one exception for this fall might be a subtle pop of hot pink. Use a light hand and try Clarity In Touch Cream Blush on the cheeks and Sugar Plum PureGloss on the lips

Does your blush disappear? Glow all day with these simple tips.

Does blush disappear on your face? It used to evaporate on mine, so I always left the house looking like a clown, hoping it would last till noon. Recently, I was lucky enough to have my makeup done at an event by our makeup artist and educator, the amazing Kevin Mendelson. He told if my blush disappears, then my skin was dehydrated. I started using Dream Tint every day under my PurePressed Base (I used to just use it on weekends instead of foundation) and I also began taking omega fatty acid supplements. My skin looks more plump and smooth than it has in ages. Sometimes I even forget to moisturize after cleansing because it doesn't feel tight! Best of all, I applied my makeup at 8 o'clock this morning and I just checked in the mirror (it's 3 pm); I don't need a touch up. No more disappearing blush!

A natural flush makes you look awake, healthy and vibrant. For cheeks that are natural and glowing all day long, try this: after applying Dream Tint, but before foundation if you are wearing it. Smile to find the apples of the cheeks and then rub a streak or two of In Touch Cream Blush straight from the tube on the part that sticks out the most. To open up the face, place it no closer in than the iris of the eye. Use the Foundation Brush to blend in a circular motion, up and out towards the temple. If I am already (gasp) at my desk, I use my fingers to blend and it works just fine. Then go on to apply your regular foundation. You will look lit from within. How simple is that?

Makeup colors that flatter everyone!

There was this great article from Yahoo and Real Simple showing four clothing colors that are universally flattering.

These colors are gorgeous, and you can see from the pictures below that they flatter quite different skin tones. If they look good on your body, how much better will they look on your face? It was easy to find these shades throughout our line; here are some of my favorites, try them out and have some fun:

Here's a great tip that comes to us from one of our sales consultants, just in time for Friday night ;-)

She says, "mix Eye Gloss with Cream to Powder Eyeliner to create a hot iced look. You can just mix them with your Camouflage Brush on the back of your hand. Just a little of this and a little of that."

Here's how: squeeze a little dab of your favorite shade of Eye Gloss onto the back of your hand; then scrape up a small amount of a coordinating color of Cream To Powder Eye Liner. For example, you could use Grey Silk Eye Gloss with the light or medium shade of Black Plus Cream To Powder Eye Liner. Blend them together on the back of your hand, and then apply using the Camouflage Brush for the eyelid, or the Eye Liner/Brow Brush to use as an eyeliner. It looks amazing, and the color will last all night!

Value and Versatility: Now That's Beauty!

I am always so proud of the amazing quality and versatility of our products, which makes them such a great value. This blog is dedicated to describing new and unusual ways our make-up can be used, but here are some strange-but-true alternative uses we gathered from blogs, Twitter, etc. Have some of your own? Don't be shy, post them here!

Truly Pure, our makeup brush shampoo, makes an amazing sulphate free shampoo for your hair!

Disappear takes the itch out of mosquito bites.

The zap (clear) side of Zap&Hide smooths severely dry, flaky lips.

Botanical Brush Cleaner makes a great DEET-free and pleasant smelling bug repellent (I personally can't stand the smell of Citronella).

D20tames frizzies! I know we gals from the Northeast are suffering with bad hair this summer!

Pommisstcan be used like Fabreeze, spray it on bedding and clothes for a sweet smell. D20 also keeps sweaters fresh when you pack them away for winter.

Balancecan be used in a pinch as a substitute for deodorant; perhaps it is the Tea Tree Oil in it.

One person wrote that when she had a skin rash, her doctor suggested she use something with Titanium Dioxide in it. She dusted herself with Powder-Me SPF and her skin felt better and it also helped camouflage the spots.

One esthetician uses shades from our Super Shape Me Brow Kit to cover up her clients' roots between coloring

Lip Drink conditions and tames unruly brows. This is great for busy-morning makeup!

Lipstick Junkies Unite!

Lipstick junkies unite! Whether it's lipstick, lip gloss, or lip plumper, you know who you are, and if anyone looks into your purse, they will know too! To lighten your load and control the chaos, keep an attractive bowl or jar by the door. When you come home, toss your lip color du jour in the jar just like people do with keys or spare change. When you grab a new color in the morning, it will be the only one in your bag. Can't choose just one color? Try our MultiLip or MultiGloss Kits. Thanks to Connie, our Program Development Manager for this fabulous tip!

Cool Beauty Contest Winners!

In June, we ran a contest asking our partners to send us their best look featuring makeup from the Cool Beauty Collection. We got many fabulous photos, all of which are posted on our Facebook fan page. We were thrilled by the diversity of the entries, showing how many totally different looks can be achieved with these products; and also how creative people can get with our makeup! It was very difficult to choose, but finally the top three picks were made by Jane and our team of National Makeup Artist/Educators.

First Place went to Camillia Rodio of Vancouver Washington:

To create this dramatic look, Camillia used Absence Primer followed by PurePressed Base in Bisque. On the eyes she used the Azure trio with the aqua hue on the eye lid and underneath rounding the corners of the eyes, and 24-Karat Gold Dust in Aquamarine. Parfait PurePressed Blush flushed the cheeks. For the lips she used Erin PureMoist LipColour topped with Cosmo PureGloss.

Second place went to Larissa Keeney of the Sandpearl Resort & Spa in Clearwater Florida.

To achieve this soft and vibrant look, Larissa primed her model Danielle's face with Absence 2, then applied Liquid Minerals in Coffee, and Amazing Base in Caramel. She finished the face with PureMatte and a spritz of D20. To conceal any imperfections, she applied Disappear in both Medium and Dark. On the Cheeks, Larissa applied PurePressed Blush in Dubonnet. For this incredible eye look, Larissa primed the lids with Canvas Lid Primer, then applied the PurePressed Triple Eye Shadow in Azure. To line the eyes, she used Liquid Eyeliner in Pinot Noir. Finishing touches included Pure Lash Extender&Conditioner and Black Ice Longest Lash Mascara on the eyes, and the brows were groomed with Smokey Grey PurePressed Eye Shadow and Brown/Black Pencil. The lips were prepped with Sugar & Butter, defined with Taupe Lip Definer, colored with PureMoistLip Colour in Julia, and kissed with PureGloss in Just Gloss.

Third place went to Linda Allen of L A Skincare in Greensboro, NC.

Her model (and daughter-in-law) Ginger's luminous look was created starting with Golden Glow Liquid Minerals and Amazing Base applied to the face and neck. Her cheeks are glowing with PurePressed Blush in Whisper and a touch of Bronzer mixed together, then Moonglow on the jaw line. To prep the eyes, Linda started with Canvas Lid Primer on the eyelids. She then applied Azure to the upper lids, and Pinot Noir Liquid Eyeliner to upper eyelid; and finished with two coats of Longest Lash Mascara in Black Ice. The brows were beautifully shaped with Brunette Super Shape Me Eyebrow Kit. Ginger's lips were lined with Nude Lip Definer, Julia PureMoist LipColour and Just Gloss. As a finishing touch, Aquamarine 24-Karat Gold Dust was dusted in the hair and on the décolleté.

Oily skin can be fresh and pretty with mineral makeup!

During the summer, most of us experience increased shine on our faces, and for gals with oily skin it's a year-round battle. I checked in with Christine our Makeup Artistry specialist, to get some advice:

First, she has noted that since she began using Dream Tint, her skin has balanced out and is not as oily. Often, if there is not enough moisture in the skin, the sebaceous glands will become overactive. What a paradox!

If serious shine-control is still needed, a great first step is Absence Primer under your foundation. It controls oil without affecting the moisture, so it won't dry out the skin (starting the cycle over again). Apply it with the Foundation Brush and remember that a little goes a long way!

For the occasional (or persistent) oily moment, the Facial Blotting Papers are great in your purse or at your desk. We all love these because you are not just piling on more product, but actually removing the excess oil. I also put my business cards in the elegant case, so I have cards and blotting papers on hand and I am ready for business!

Finally, Christine recommends that we blot with the Facial Blotting Papers first, THEN apply PureMatte, Brush-Me Matte, etc.

This way, the excess oil is removed and then the rice starch in the Matte powders are there to absorb for the rest of the day or night.

I don't know about you, but I feel fresh and ready to face the day (and night)!

How to apply eyeshadow

When we talk about how to apply eye makeup, we usually mean which colors to use and where to apply them on the eye. But how we apply our eye makeup can take you from struggling with your makeup to creating artful and beautiful eyes. Here are a couple of tips from some of our artists and consultants that have really helped me:

When applying eye shadow to the lid, don't swish. Pat or press the color on with a flat brush like our Deluxe Shader Brush. The color sticks better and stays where you want it, rather than all over your face.

Apply darker eyeshadow in circular motions so that the color blends more easily and you don't have any lines or harsh areas. Try this when you are applying that darker shade in the outer corner or crease. This works beautifully with soft and natural eye makeup looks, and also with dramatic looks, vivid shades, and smokey eyes. By blending as you apply, you don't have that hard edge that is so difficult to blend away.

For in-depth tips on applying contour shadow, see our earlier blog post on that subject. I also love this video using our Daytime Eyeshadow Kit.

I will admit, it took me awhile to change to Longest Lash Mascara, but now I am a dedicated convert and I am here to spread the word!

The texture is thick because we replaced the water found in most mascaras with conditioning algae extracts. It takes a little getting used to, but with a few little tricks from my friends here at jane iredale (including Jane), I have really fallen in love with this remarkable mascara, and now I won't use anything else:

For truly luscious lashes, apply a coat of PureLash Extender & Conditioner; then while it is still damp, apply Longest Lash Mascara in your favorite shade. It goes on like a dream and you get full feathery lashes with no clumps! Why should you buy a separate lash conditioner? Would you ever wash your hair and skip conditioner? Then why would you let your lashes dry out and get brittle?

In a pinch, right after spritzing your face with Hydration Spray, apply Longest Lash Mascara while your lashes are still wet and the mascara glides right on.

Rock the brush at the base of the lashes and move the brush up and out. Don't overdo mascara. It makes eye look larger for sure, but if it's applied too heavily, it can also pull the focus and draw attention to matted lashes (what is with the spider-lash trend?).

Try it once without your eyelash curler and you may decide you no longer need one!

If you skimped on sleep, apply mascara to top lashes only to wake up tired eyes.

Looking for extra drama? Apply extra coats to the outer third of your lashes, fanning up and out. To create a doe-eyed Twiggy-look, fan the inner third up and in, the middle third straight up and the outer third up and out.

If you are going day to night, you can simply apply extra coats of Longest Lash Mascara right on top. It will not clump or flake! Try that with another mascara!

Color choices: Black Ice is classic black, and provides drama and definition. Espresso makes blue eyes really pop. Ripe Plum is a great look for green eyes, or to contrast with this spring's teal and aqua eye shadows. It looks especially flirty r Dark Blonde is great for blondes (of course) and those looking for a softer lash look. it never seems harsh! Dark Auburn is a stunning shade for red-heads and green-eyed gals. Slate Grey works well with silver tresses as well as anyone seeking a softer option.

Make-up Basics: Applying Concealer

This tip comes from Jane, whose skin always looks flawless and completely natural:

The skin isn't smooth like a piece of plastic, so to get full coverage apply your concealer with the Camouflage Brush using criss-cross motions. This gets the concealer into the fine lines on the skin that aren't normally visible.

Then, to make your concealer completely disappear, feather the edges with your ring finger. The warmth from your finger will melt the concealer into your skin.

How to create long-lasting lip color

One of the things I love about jane iredale mineral make-up is how versatile it is. So I really got excited about this tip from one of our sales consultants: Mix an Eye Gloss in with your lip color to make it more color-stay. Her own favorite combination is to mix the Peach Eye Gloss with Clarity In Touch Cream Blush then top with In the Pink PureGloss. She says "It is my FAVORITE pale pink and it stays all night!

The combinations are endless: Some suggestions for Eye Gloss shades include Peach, Champagne, Lilac, and Wine Silk (especially lovely on darker skin tones). I mixed Lilac Silk Eye Gloss with Erin LipColour to create the perfect shade of cool, shimmery pink that complimented this gorgeous eye shadow look using Cloud Nine. And it lasted for hours. A bit of gloss or Lip Drink on top helps keep it moist.
