Pure Ingredients and Makeup Safety

From time to time we get questions about ratings in the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database, which rates the safety of cosmetics.

Although we support EWG which is responsible for the Skin Deep site, we also have serious issues with it.  The methods it has for assessing products is done without any discussion with the manufacturer and, therefore, leads to inaccurate information.  For example, it has assumed that we use nano technology in our sunscreens which is not true.  We have tried to enter into a discussion with them about this but they are unresponsive and have not replied to phone calls or e-mails.  They also pay no attention to quantities used in a product.  For example, they rate everything the same whether it's 50% of the formula or .005%.  This is hugely important since ingredients are toxic at different levels.  Homeopathy, for example, says that there is no such thing as a toxic ingredient, just toxic amounts.

EWG gives us a toxic rating on our 24 karat food-grade gold because they rate it as colloidal gold which it isn't.  They rate the lakes we use toxic because commonly lakes and FD&C dyes are made from petroleum - ours aren't.  The lakes we use are natural dyes bonded to a calcium substrate.  We do everything we can to make our products as clean as possible.

If you have an issue with a particular ingredient, please don't hesitate to ask us about it.  We will explain why we use it and how it is derived. Contact us at info@janeiredale.com.

Thank you for the article. I was looking throught the Skin Deep site and thought that their ratings seems rather odd. Thanks for clarifying things. =)

Is this product tested on animals? What do you consider "natural?" Would you consider this a vegan would use? I absolutely love the look and feel of this product but not at the expense of harming another such as animals or myself with the toxins. Thank you...

Hi Annette,

Thanks for your great question. We know there is a lot of information and mis-information out there, and it can be hard to sort through.

Our products are never tested on animals – only human subjects - and we have earned PETA's "Cruelty-Free" designation. You will also find us listed on the following website, http://www.caringconsumer.com.

Many of our products are vegan, but some contain beeswax and carmine. Those colors are listed on our web site http://www.janeiredale.com/vegans.html.

Even our brushes are cruelty free! All of the hair used in the manufacture of our brushes comes from after-market suppliers. The hair is obtained either through the grooming processes, shedding and collection, etc. No animals are harmed in any way.

Our products are non-irritating, non-comedegenic and non-toxic. We do not use fillers. In addition to the information above, we proudly display our ingredients on our Web site (janeiredale.com). This allows you to research each ingredient. We also provide a glossary on our Web site to explain the ingredients and their purpose http://janeiredale.com/tips_glossary.html.

Again, thank you for your concern and keep researching!

What is the best way to clean the face-cleaner mit?
Posted @ Tuesday, March 02, 2010 12:42 PM by Amy Stone
I have looked at many of the ingredients of your products and a lot seem to be vegan or vegetarian. However, many seem to contain stearic acid or derivatives and glycerin or glycerin derivatives. These can be derived from plant or animal sources. Are any of your ingredients derived from animal sources? If so, which ingredients are?
Posted @ Saturday, March 13, 2010 10:08 AM by Becky
Hi Amy,

Sorry, I didn't see your post there! The best way to clean the Magic Mitt is with plain (gentle) hand soap. Just rinse well! It couldn't be easier. P.S. I was on a trip recently and forgot my Magic Mitt. I couldn't believe how much dirt and makeup regular face cleanser left behind!

Hi there, do any of your products contain nano particles?
Posted @ Tuesday, May 18, 2010 5:39 AM by Jane
Hi Jane,

There are no nano particles in any of our products.

Hi

I would like to try the Jane Iredale range but am concerned about one ingredient. Please can you tell me which of the Purepressed base foundations contain Chromium Oxide Greens and which don't? I have read about this ingredient being a known teratogen and carcinogen and wish to avoid it.

Also, what is the concentration of Chromium Oxide Greens in the Active light under eye concealer in shade number 3?

Do you have any information on how you manufacture Chromium Oxide Greens to make it a safe ingredient to use in your products?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Posted @ Tuesday, August 03, 2010 10:55 AM by sweeta
HI Gemma,

Sorry, it took me awhile to get back to you!

We use Chromium Oxide Greens at very, very small percentages, as it is just a coating on a Mica used for coloring.

Active Light #3 does not contain it, only in #6, where it is in a tiny amount as a coating on another ingredient.

For more information on Chromium oxide Green and which products contain it, please see our Website http://janeiredale.com/tips_glossary.html#C

I hope this helps!

HI Sweeta,

Some of our products have a "best used by" date printed on them. Others have a "Period After Opening" date which means there is no expiration date, but once opened, the products will stay freshest within that time period (usually 12-18 months). All of this information can be found on the packaging.

However, in my experience, they last a lot longer than that! If your skin is sensitive, and you are worried a product has expired, do a little patch test to see if it irritates your skin.

Good luck!

In March you listed the products that have carmine in it. Do any of the newer products have it?

Hi Geta,

We have updated our information for vegans since to include our new products here: http://shop.janeiredale.com/vegans.htm

I love your lip color ( lip moist formula I think) in Diana, but I cannot find it anymore. Why not? Do you have a color tha is very similar to it?
Posted @ Tuesday, December 28, 2010 4:26 PM by Sue
Hello. I am writing regarding the expiration date. I bought three Jane Iredale products: (1) Liquid Minerals with the stampt on its bottom "10037-Ree", (2) Brush-me Matte with the stamp on its bottom "150708-07N" and (3) PureGloss with the stamp "10F30N". Are the first and the third products expired?

Thanks.
Posted @ Wednesday, January 05, 2011 4:48 AM by Assiya
Hi Assiya,

I checked with our production team and those products are not expired, they are recent batches. Why did you think so?
Posted @ Wednesday, January 05, 2011 8:41 AM by Angelica Chayes
Hi Sue,
Sorry it took so long to get back to you about Diana, I had to track this one down. Please try our Just Kissed Lip Plumper in NYC as a substitute. I feel your pain, I hate it when one of my favorite shades gets discontinued. I hope this helps.

Hi,

You have the PETA cruelty free symbol on your website, but your statement about animal testing just says that your products are not tested on animals (it doesn't mention ingredients).

Can you tell me whether your ingredient are tested on animals?

Thanks, Helen.

Hi Helen,

I am not ignoring you, I wanted to be sure to follow up very carefully on your question so I am still doing that and will let you know as soon as I have a definitve answer.

Thanks!

Hi Helen,

Sorry it took me so long to get your answer. I am proud to say that neither our ingredients nor our products are tested on animals.

Hi,

I have just started using Jane Iredale's products and so far, I am rather pleased with it. However, I am a little concerned with some of the ingredients used, such as silica and Silicone Powder in Absence. Are the amount of it used in the product truly safe and beneficial to our skin?
Posted @ Monday, July 18, 2011 2:17 PM by Jody
Hi Jody,

My name is Joanna and I work at jane iredale. This is a fantastic question, thanks for asking! These silicones are derived from sand to assist with absorption of oil and add to the texture of the product. We test all of our products to be sure that they are safe and beneficial to your skin.

Hi,

I've recently bought Jane Iredale Absence oil control primer and there is no expiry date on it. PAO is 12 months (stated on the bottom)and marking 1D33 also on the jar bottom. Is it fresh or not? How can I decipher manufacture date using these markings without disturbing JI staff?

Hi Elena,

First off you are never disturbing us, we love to answer any questions you have! The PAO of 12 months means that we recommend you use the product within 12 months of opening it. Often times product will last long beyond this time. It does not become bad for you, you just may notice a change in texture or smell. If that happens you may choose to replace the product.

Hi,

I've recently bought a pure pressed mineral powder from Jane Iredale. The stamp on its bottom is "150910-35Ner". Does this mean that it expired September 15th 2010? Thanks in advance for your help!
Posted @ Saturday, December 10, 2011 1:56 PM by Lina
Hi Lina,

Those numbers are for batch tracking purposes. Somewhere on your PurePressed Base there should be a little open jar symbol with the number 24 written inside. This symbol will be on all of our products, although the number inside may vary. In the case of PurePressed base, it means that we recommend you use our product within 24 months of opening it, until then it has not expired.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for writing this article and answering all the questions. I've used your product for years and just recently realized I should start paying attention to harmful chemicals in everything. I thought I was going to need to switch products but after your explanations you kept me as a customer. Just wanted to say thanks.
