From time to time we get questions about ratings in the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database, which rates the safety of cosmetics.

Although we support EWG which is responsible for the Skin Deep site, we also have serious issues with it.  The methods it has for assessing products is done without any discussion with the manufacturer and, therefore, leads to inaccurate information.  For example, it has assumed that we use nano technology in our sunscreens which is not true.  We have tried to enter into a discussion with them about this but they are unresponsive and have not replied to phone calls or e-mails.  They also pay no attention to quantities used in a product.  For example, they rate everything the same whether it's 50% of the formula or .005%.  This is hugely important since ingredients are toxic at different levels.  Homeopathy, for example, says that there is no such thing as a toxic ingredient, just toxic amounts.

EWG gives us a toxic rating on our 24 karat food-grade gold because they rate it as colloidal gold which it isn't.  They rate the lakes we use toxic because commonly lakes and FD&C dyes are made from petroleum - ours aren't.  The lakes we use are natural dyes bonded to a calcium substrate.  We do everything we can to make our products as clean as possible.

If you have an issue with a particular ingredient, please don't hesitate to ask us about it.  We will explain why we use it and how it is derived. Contact us at info@janeiredale.com.

Is this product tested on animals? What do you consider "natural?" Would you consider this a vegan would use? I absolutely love the look and feel of this product but not at the expense of harming another such as animals or myself with the toxins. Thank you...

Hi Annette,

Thanks for your great question. We know there is a lot of information and mis-information out there, and it can be hard to sort through.

Our products are never tested on animals – only human subjects - and we have earned PETA's "Cruelty-Free" designation. You will also find us listed on the following website, http://www.caringconsumer.com.

Many of our products are vegan, but some contain beeswax and carmine. Those colors are listed on our web site http://www.janeiredale.com/vegans.html.

Even our brushes are cruelty free! All of the hair used in the manufacture of our brushes comes from after-market suppliers. The hair is obtained either through the grooming processes, shedding and collection, etc. No animals are harmed in any way.

Our products are non-irritating, non-comedegenic and non-toxic. We do not use fillers. In addition to the information above, we proudly display our ingredients on our Web site (janeiredale.com). This allows you to research each ingredient. We also provide a glossary on our Web site to explain the ingredients and their purpose http://janeiredale.com/tips_glossary.html.

Again, thank you for your concern and keep researching!

What is the best way to clean the face-cleaner mit?
Posted @ Tuesday, March 02, 2010 12:42 PM by Amy Stone
I have looked at many of the ingredients of your products and a lot seem to be vegan or vegetarian. However, many seem to contain stearic acid or derivatives and glycerin or glycerin derivatives. These can be derived from plant or animal sources. Are any of your ingredients derived from animal sources? If so, which ingredients are?

Hi Amy,

Sorry, I didn't see your post there! The best way to clean the Magic Mitt is with plain (gentle) hand soap. Just rinse well! It couldn't be easier. P.S. I was on a trip recently and forgot my Magic Mitt. I couldn't believe how much dirt and makeup regular face cleanser left behind!

Hi there, do any of your products contain nano particles?
Posted @ Tuesday, May 18, 2010 5:39 AM by Jane
Hi Jane,

There are no nano particles in any of our products.

Hi

I would like to try the Jane Iredale range but am concerned about one ingredient. Please can you tell me which of the Purepressed base foundations contain Chromium Oxide Greens and which don't? I have read about this ingredient being a known teratogen and carcinogen and wish to avoid it.

Also, what is the concentration of Chromium Oxide Greens in the Active light under eye concealer in shade number 3?

Do you have any information on how you manufacture Chromium Oxide Greens to make it a safe ingredient to use in your products?

I look forward to hearing from you.

HI Gemma,

Sorry, it took me awhile to get back to you!

We use Chromium Oxide Greens at very, very small percentages, as it is just a coating on a Mica used for coloring.

Active Light #3 does not contain it, only in #6, where it is in a tiny amount as a coating on another ingredient.

For more information on Chromium oxide Green and which products contain it, please see our Website http://janeiredale.com/tips_glossary.html#C

I hope this helps!

HI Sweeta,

Some of our products have a "best used by" date printed on them. Others have a "Period After Opening" date which means there is no expiration date, but once opened, the products will stay freshest within that time period (usually 12-18 months). All of this information can be found on the packaging.

However, in my experience, they last a lot longer than that! If your skin is sensitive, and you are worried a product has expired, do a little patch test to see if it irritates your skin.

Good luck!
